1:1 scale of the Messerschmitt Bf 109W, first one is a bf 109w for Spee's H-39 and second one is a Bf 109w with Aichi M6A 晴嵐 "Seiran" style floats and gray camo
About the plane:
In late 1939, the German military planned to invade Denmark and Norway in the spring of 1940. The Luftwaffe (German Air Force) was concerned about protecting their transports during the invasion, especially from British fighters based in Norway and on Royal Navy carriers.
To address this, they considered using a modified version of the Bf 109 or the "Me-109" fighter that could operate from water. Fieseler, a company, was tasked with designing this floatplane version. The first test flight of this modified Me-109, called the Me-109W-0, happened on December 23, 1939. However, the results were disappointing; it was slower, had reduced range, and was less maneuverable due to the added weight of floats.
Despite these problems, six more aircraft were converted into a slightly improved version, the Me-109W-1. These were delivered in June 1940, but by then, the need for them had passed. They were tested in Norway for possible use in an invasion of the British Isles, but they proved unsuitable. The pilots didn't like their lack of maneuverability, and two were lost in landing accidents during the tests.
After only four months, the experiment was abandoned, and the remaining four aircraft were scrapped.
Note:
18th aircraft! Going great with the 109 build! This one is not my favourite but definitely a unique design. I'm a lazy one so for the folded version I added one from Spee's KMS Friedrich der Große H-39 screenshots. Anyway that's the end of the 109's collection, for now at least.. I hope you like this one and I will see you on the next one, jyaa!
