Construction began on May 15, 1926, and it was opened for service on August 2, 1928. From late 1928 to November 1933 she served the route India, Australia, Japan. From early November 1933, she then served the North Atlantic route. In June 1942 she was drafted and converted into a troop transport to support the campaign in North Africa. During one of her many voyages across the Mediterranean, she was sunk on April 2, 1943.
