On June 18, 2023, the submersible dives approximately 1450 kilometers east of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Lost contact approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes after departure. On June 22nd, Ocean Gate Exploration Company issued a statement confirming that 5 crew members of the deep-sea submersible had unfortunately died.
In July, an internal email from a former employee of Ocean Gate was exposed, which revealed serious loopholes and deficiencies in the safety risk assessment and testing of submarines within the company.
