Nickel (before 1945 — Kolosjoki, fin. Kolosjoki) is a city, the administrative center of the Pechengsky district of the Murmansk region of Russia.
The town of Nickel is mentioned in the final part of Ketil Bjornstad's trilogy "The Lady from the Valley". The main character Axel Winding, being in the village of Svanvik (Norway), sees the pipes of a mining and metallurgical combine: - In this valley we are sandwiched between Finland and Russia, — says Sigrun. — We have the largest virgin pine forest in Norway here. A heavenly place. But do you see those tall chimneys over the hill to the east? It's Nickel. The city of miners. The life expectancy there is very small. Residents are poor even by Soviet standards. — Why is there a short life expectancy? — Due to an infection of the respiratory tract. And it is from the emissions of all the factories and factories that work in the city. Look at the smoke coming out of these chimneys. There's a big factory in the suburbs. Norilsk Nickel.
