Welcome to ProjectS from the pure-imaginations Minecraft Creative and Educational build team. ProjectS is a 1.11.2 Java (PC) map created without the use of extra plug-ins or texture pack so it is ready to download with minimum effort.

But what is ProjectS?

Inspired by Simon Baddeley and developed by the creative team at pure-imaginations ProjectS is a tool for inspiring creative writing in a media many of your pupils will be familiar with.

You land in a Village Square surrounded by shops, homes and dominated by the 'Tree of Souls'. Explore inside the tree to find a range of stalls and small businesses, Temples to the 4 elements (Fire, Water, Air and Earth) looked over by the 'Star of Time'. From the trees heart you can travel inside it's root system to all the building plots and homes on the main island.

Heading back to the Village square you are free to explore the main island which is furnished with a range of 11 themed businesses and homes, 35 blank building plots for learners to create their own homes or businesses and 3 started undesignated houses for teachers or less confident pupils to take ownership of. Each plot is clearly labelled and defined using a range of building styles to stimulate and inspire your learners.

From the main island explore out onto the 6 mini islands. The dessert has a hidden oasis. The jungle has a cave behind the waterfall (what treasure could lay there?). Is the owner of the Ice Castle kind or mean, why? The Pirates are the Islands traders replenishing the Islanders with goods from far away lands, but be careful! You don't want to end up languishing in the oubliette! Elephant skull Island has a temple with a hidden chamber! Finally the volcano is home to our Dragon who keeps vigil over the 'Star of time' through the window in the tree! Being very old he/she is very wise and a journey to the top of the volcano to discuss your troubles may bear fruits, or perhaps you simply wish to crack the maze to steal his/her treasure! Another creature of merit is the Unicorn that guards the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. If your need is great and you decide to risk climbing the concealed path that winds up the outside of the Tree of Souls and cross the top of the rainbow you may make a wish at the pot of gold. But be warned....the Unicorn has the unenviable task of maintaining the balance of nature. For every wish cast to the pot of gold a negative incident of equal measure will befall a loved one, is it worth the risk? No? Well in that case you may instead wish to seek help from the Witch or Wizard. This is not without it's draw backs as they have been rivals for many years and their competitive nature knows no limits, just look at their homes!

So how do I use the map with my class?
  1. Begin by encouraging learners to explore and get a feel for the world.
  2. Decide what other job roles will be needed on the island to build a functioning and sustainable society. (Existing builds are Bakery, Farm, Carpenters, Stone Mason, Witch and Wizards homes, Butcher, Blacksmiths, Mayor's House, Gardener's Home and Engineer)
  3. Designate job roles to individual members of the class. Encourage learners to research their job, design a player skin and home/business premises suitable for their character.
  4. Designate plots to learners and encourage them to 'be creative' building their home or business.
  5. Are there any empty plots? The class may wish to look at what other communal builds they would like to add or they may wish to save these for a later date?
  6. Split the class into smaller groups (about 4 or 5 learners) and encourage them to draft out a story plot involving their characters.
  7. Encourage them to start building 'back stories' for each of the characters relating to the story plot.
  8. Learners may now begin to write the play's dialogue and consider appropriate locations within the map for each scene. Will additional characters be needed? If so who will take on their role? Highlight the importance of adding humour, suspense, intrigue and twists making the plot as engaging as they can.
  9. Rehears the play both in and out of game world. Learners should pay special attention to characters voices, accents and timing for humour and suspense. Let learners demonstrate how they have highlighted these in written work by appropriate use of punctuation.
  10. Learner can now record their play 'in game' and share with the rest of the class or the community at large.
  11. Have learners gather feedback from other members of the class. Encourage the use of personal evaluation methods to highlight what they would have done differently, why and record these.

Depending on class size this exercise can be repeated multiple times by mixing the groups, each time growing the learners character.

Why not type the play into 'Minecraft books' and add these to chests outside the characters houses so others looking to include these characters in their stories can read about their journey so far?

As time goes by and the groups confidence grows they may wish to add more islands to expand their characters journeys. This is a very positive step. We designed this map as a starting point. It will very quickly evolve into their world. Each world will evolve differently as each group brings different aspects of their personality to play. As a teacher you do not need to know everything about 'the game', letting the learners become your teacher in this small aspect of the lesson will breed confidence and respect for your job role. The game is a tool to stimulate in a media they are familiar with. Traditional teaching skills and goals are still at the forefront. Traditional methods of grammar, punctuation, spelling, sentence forming and hand writing are still used and assessed applicable to learners targets.
