What you see here is my most time-consuming build to date. All told, this took almost two months of on-and-off sessions to put together. Weeks ago, I saw a completely random series of movies that had one thing in common: They were all set in a world of stately mansions and castles. Subconsciously, I knew then and there that I was eventually going to have to build something similar, to release all the pent up inspiration and creative energy. But I also knew how much time I was going to have to invest, regardless of the wealth of initial ideas. So I did my best to try and suppress the notion. Eventually, I couldn't walk down a city street without seeing potential building elements on every corner, so I decided I needed to get it out of my system.

I knew from the start that I wanted to build more of a Gilded Age mansion rather than some sort of rustic, ancient English fortress. So I pulled up a handful of photographs of the famous Vanderbilt mansions to use as a reference in developing a design language to guide me. I initially planned to build a modified version of The Breakers, but I had to scale it back when I realized that it was getting too enormous to actually recreate and use in a survival game (which is the motivation behind any and all of my builds). I kept the associated working title, though – Riptide Castle.

Since this is the result of weeks and weeks of building and re-building, I'm not even entirely sure that I like what I ended up creating. Sometime last week, I noticed a sense of palate fatigue setting in. I was beginning to have a hard time judging what I liked and didn't like, so I focused on wrapping up the project. That's also why the interior may look rather uninspired in some places. I fully admit to phoning it in towards the end. As you can see, there are two large halls (a library and a formal dining room, respectively) on the first floor, whereas the second floor consists of four identical rooms, two on either side of the main hall. Of those four rooms, I only roughly furnished one to make sure it would fit a whole set of basic equipment – I'm planning on putting this to use as a shared base in a future multiplayer game.

To summarize: I mainly built this to get an increasingly obsessive idea out of the back of my mind. But despite the interior being a little sparse, I think it came out okay. I might come back to it in a couple of months and see how I did with a fresh set of eyes. Until then, I hope that someone else gets some use out of it.

Please feel free to use my designs anywhere you want. However, please don't publicly pass them off as your own by using them in a video or re-uploading them to your profile without providing a link to the original project. Thank you.
