Since apples drop so rarely as to be practically pointless (at least to use as food), this orchard (as well as its larger version that's designed to fit 2x2 trees) is really more of a wood farm than an actual fruit plantation.
I tend to go through enormous amounts of wood for my builds, and since I've actively been trying to slow down my first few hours of gameplay (in order to savor what is basically the best part of Minecraft), I decided to build a proper structure for planting trees to keep myself from just covering my construction site with a grid of saplings and torches.
What's nice about this orchard, is that it doesn't become pointless later on. Even after you're done building, you still need wood for a lot of things. Plus, you can just use it as a little park to stroll through from time to time, which, come to think of it, makes it an excellent decorative addition to any little village or town, regardless of its original purpose.
