This is a simple design for flood gates.
It is efficient because the design spreads the water out even though there are only 2 openings. This makes the design a lot more compact and less lag-inducing.
This design is very easy to manipulate, so it can work for just about any size you want, as long as the blocks have an equal ratio to these blocks. I have not tested this design with different sizes, so I can't help you with anything but the original design.
