Die SS Holstein wurde 1901 zusammen mit ihren beiden Schwesterschiffen SS Schleswig(1902) und SS Lauenburg(1904) von der Schleswig Holsteinischen Schiffahrtsgesellschaft für den Transatlantik Dienst gebaut. Sie war zu dieser Zeit eines der grössten und luxuriösesten Schiffe der Welt. 1913 wurde sie im Zuge des Titanic Unglücks mit mehr Rettungsbooten und höheren Schottwänden ausgestattet, ausserdem wurden einige Verbesserungsvorschläge umgesetzt. Während des 1. Weltkrieges lag sie untätig in Hamburg. Nach dem Krieg musste das Schiff an die britische Cunard Line als Reparationszahlung gegeben werden. Cunard benannte das Schiff in Mesopotamia um und setzte es 1920 wieder auf die Transatlantik Route. 1926 wurde sie in ein reines Kreuzfahrtschiff umgebaut und 1932 zur verschrottung verkauft.

The SS Holstein was built in 1901 together with her two sister ships SS Schleswig(1902) and SS Lauenburg(1904) by the Schleswig Holsteinische Schiffahrts-gesellschaft for transatlantic service. At that time she wwas on of the largest and most luxurious ships in the world. In 1913, in the wake of Titanic desaster, she was equipped with more lifeboats and higher bulkheads, and some suggestions for improvement were implemented. During the Great war she lay inactive in Hamburg. After the war, the ship had to be given to the british Cunard line as reperations. Cunard renamed the ship Mesopotamia and put her back on the transatlantic route in 1920. In 1926 she was converted into a cruise ship and was sold for scrap in 1932.
