The cathedral`s construction began in the 12th century and is today known as one of the most important Gothic structures in Austria. During the World War II , the building experienced nearly complete destruction. It was reconstructed from 1948 until 1962.

It is 107 meters long and 34 meters wide. The walls of the cathedral are made of limestone with detailed statues in a Romanesque and Gothic style. The entrance, also known as the
Giant`s Door, got it`s name from a mastodon thighbone that hung above the door in
the 15th century. The Giant`s Door is the oldest part of the cathedral.

The tallest tower, of the four towers, is the south tower at 136 meters. The tower`s completion was in 1433 and was known to be the world`s highest tower for more than 50 years.
It consists of 343 steps and 13 bells. The best known bell however, is the ''Pummerin'' located in the unfinished north tower.

The bell has a diameter of 314 cm and is the third largest swinging bell in the world with a weight of 20130 kg.

The very decorative and coloured roof, has a Imperial double-headed black eagle made out of 230.000 tiles. The St. Stephen`s Cathedral has valuable altars, side chaples, relics decorated with gold and precous stones, monstrances, liturgical texts and books as well as vestments.

Important people such as Emperor Friedrich III, Prince Eugene of Savoy, the Habsburg duke Rudolph IV, cardinals and archbishops were given their final resting place in the St. Stephen`s Cathedral. Also Niki Lauda, Formula 1 Legend, is publicly laid out in the cathedral.

5.2 Million people visit the St.Stephen`s cathedral, approximately 14.000 per day and is therefore, Vienna`s most seen attraction.

The historical center of Vienna is one of two UNESCO world heritages with an area of 8.33km².

Im 12. Jahrhundert wurde mit dem Bau des Stephansdom begonnen. Heute ist er das bedeutendste gotische Bauwerk Österreichs. Während des zweiten Weltkriegs, wurde das Gebäude fast vollständig zerstört. Der Wiederaufbau begann 1948 und endete 1962.

Der Stephansdom ist 107 Meter lang und 34 Meter breit. Die Außenwände sind aus Kalksteinen hergestellt und bestückt mit detaillierten Statuen im romanischen und gotischen Stiel.
Der Haupteingang, den man auch ''Riesentür'' nennt, ist nach einem Mastodon-Oberschenkelknochen, der im 15. Jahrhundert, jahrzehntelang darüber hing benannt. Der Haupteingang ist auch eines der ältesten Teile der Kathedrale.

Der höchste Turm, von insgesamt 4 Türmen, ist der Südturm mit 136 Meter. Der Turm wurde 1433 fertigstellt und war mehr als 50 Jahre der höchste Turm der Welt. Der Turm besteht aus 343 Stufen und 13 Glocken.

Die bekannteste Glocke ist aber die Pummerin Glocke im nicht fertiggestelltem Nordturm. Sie ist mit 314 cm Durchmesser und 20130 kg die drittgrößte freischwingende Kirchenglocke der Welt.

Das Dach besteht aus insgesamt 230,000 bunten Dachziegeln und einem Doppeladler. Zu sehen sind neben wertvollen Altären und Seitenkappellen, auch der beeindruckende Domschatz mit Reliquien aus Gold und Edelsteinen, Monstranzen, liturgischen Texten und Büchern sowie Gewändern.

Bedeutende Persönlichkeiten wie Kaiser Friedrich III, Prinz Eugene von Savoyen und auch Kardinäle und Erzbischöfe wurden hier beigesetzt. Formel 1 Legende, Niki Lauda wird auch für die Öffentlichkeit im Stephansdom aufgebahrt.

5,2 Millionen Menschen besuchen den Stephansdom jährlich. Das sind ca. 14,000 Besucher
pro Tag.

Das historische Zentrum von Wien ist eines von zwei UNESCO Welterbestätten in der österreichischen Hauptstadt Wien mit einer Fläche von 8,33m².
