Have you ever read Absolution Gap by Alastair Reynolds. it involves hundreds of moving cathedrals making a constant pilgrimage around the world that involves them crossing a giant glass bridge kilometres long. all of the cathedrals are different with different modes of movement from tank treads to legs.
