I made this to demonstrate how to make a redstone streetlight that doesn't take up much space, and turns on and off with day and night. The glowstone in the picture is ground level. Just cover up the redstone wiring with whatever you want, but the daylight detector must be covered by glass.

The top piston is a sticky piston, the bottom is a normal piston.

Things a bit large, isn't it? I mean, its not hard to take up less space. I made one with no pistons, only one daylight sensor, and is only 1 wide by 2 tall and 4 long. Well at least the light itself. not counting the rest of the machine in the height.

Well, the pole can be pretty much any length you want, but the underground part isn't necessary. It just pushes the pole up so that it doesn't look like there's an open space at the top. By cover the daylight detector with glass, I mean the underground one.

Sure thing. If you swap out the pistons for a simple inverter, it would save you alot of space.
