Press the button and watch the text of your choosing scroll across the display. You could place one at the gate to a town with a welcome message or a way of communicating on an adventure map, they're loads of possibilities.

The memory is easily changed as it stores the letter directly as an image. With a tool like world edit, break open the side like in picture 3 and you can see repeaters placed in the shape of the letter you want (On a 4x5 grid), on picture 3 it's the shape of a P. Just remove and place the repeats to shape the letter you want, restore the siding to the memory and your letter is done. Rinse and repeat to program in your message and your done, press the button on the front to run it.
