I've been doing this tower on update 12w08a. I'm not sure if it will be still working on earlier realise.
Please do not copy this tower on your server / own world without my permission.
If you want my permission please wrote to me at PlanetMinecraft.

And if you won't spawn in front of the tower then try to use cartographer.
