" Despite the stereotypical Elven ideology for the preservation of the forest, there is clear usage of wood in many elven villages. In fact, about 90% of the building materials are wood derivative. To answer such a question, one may also realize that very few of the buildings have the same color of wood from the surrounding trees. This is because most of the wood has been taken from somewhere else; quite likely imported or removed from northern sources. If one were to look at the inner material of the wood, however, the color of the planks indicate that they have been taken from surrounding woods.
The basic tradition of the Lothar elves dictate that all the woods used to make the structure of the buildings are taken from outside sources; both for practicality and religion’s sake. Any inner woodwork is done with native trees, often from the very same tree that stood in place of the house. It is also known that each tree that is fallen by an elf is ceremoniously honored in a collective funeral once the gathering has been done.
To compensate for the simple layout of each house, it is tradition for the builder of the house to spend much of his spare time carving into the wood. Each house generally has vine-and-leaf engravings, though some stray from this standard with imagery of the builder’s personal life. This allows the citizens of the village to quickly locate the house of a single person; the family of the village brewer will have the imagery of an elf brewing malts upon the top of the doorframe.
Each house generally lasts about 5 decades before various renovations must be done. Though the structural wood is very well seasoned and kept, the inner woodwork is often replaced twice in one elf’s lifetime. This refreshment is also a good opportunity for the elf to carve new imagery onto its planks. "
