What is Coma Void?

Coma Void was basically the Minecraft home of CastleHillNLKiltotonicMuggal64 and Peppercopia.  We started playing a couple of years ago and after having some reliability issues with self-hosting we rented a server.  We played about 6 months on the map doing survival builds, having adventures, and learning the game.  After 1.7 we decided to open it up to the public.  This server doesn't exist as a money-making endeavor (though covering server costs at some point would be nice! - but not necessary), it's not an attempt to get the largest player base in the world, or any other "I need more players" reasons. The server is simply a place for mature Minecraft survival enthusiasts who value sportsmanship to call home.

No I mean what is "Coma Void"?

Oh.  Well I always thought the mechanism the PC version of Minecraft uses to bound the world (ie "The Void") was a very cool design solution in the game, so our server is named after the first astronomical void that was discovered in the 1970's, which from a time in history is also the decade most of the first generation of video gamers were born and started playing video games.

What's that first place you spawn in the void all about?

You'd be surprised how many people can't make the two-block jump to get over to the portal  - I like to call this the void kiddie collector :)

What's the whole "Prove Yourself" thing about?

It's basically a deterrent to people who just want to jump in on a Minecraft server, cause havoc, and then leave.  The "Prove Yourself" world makes a new player have to at least take the time to follow some simple instructions, build something to spec, and then wait for approval from an admin to get into the main world.  It isn't a 100% filter but cuts down on less than serious players.  If you are coming to play it shouldn't be that big a deal and gives you a 1-on-1 interaction with the staff so we get to meet each other.

Guiding Principles for the Server

Here are a few principles on what the server is, and isn't, and what guides our decisions on what gets set up in Coma Void:
  1. Coma Void is a survival-economy server, we won't have options for players to enter creative mode within the Coma Void world. The economy features are meant to help in getting rare items or large quantities of items quickly.  For example you don't want to spend an hour getting mining cobble or smelting and crafting stone brick, you can buy it - more like real life.
  2. Coma Void is trying to create a Minecraft "place"- a persistent world with towns connected together via an extensive road system is cool (to me anyway).  You can build on your own anywhere in the wilderness you want but when it comes to block protection and other cool stuff you are basically on your own unless you are building in a town.
  3. Coma Void strives for Map Persistence. We understand and value the time it takes for you to build your creations.  We will do everything possible to prevent resetting the map.
  4. Because we are all grown men and don't have a ton of time to dedicate consistently to the operation of the server, any suggestions from the players for anything too "fancy" and needing a lot of maintenance probably won't happen for now.
  5. As long as Minecraft is a thing, we will keep this server up and available.  I personally cannot see myself ever totally abandoning Minecraft, and having a stable server to play on will be part of that experience for me.
