Backstory*
She grew up in a small town in the plains and went by the name Phoebe. As a child, she was quite isolated and relied on her vivid imagination. Later she discovered that she has some magical powers that let her control the elements. A boy who lived near her taught her how to use them. This also helped her develop self-confidence and social skills.
Entering adulthood, Phoebe, her friend and some other young people from the town got a summer job as wandering monster fighters. You know, there are always some nasty creatures roaming around the country roads. As a result of this adventure, they were recruited to join the real defense groups. Phoebe wasn't good at fighting, so she first became a cartographer. She used her magic skills for balancing the mind and small everyday problems, like walking through a frozen swamp. Later the country got into some conflicts and she was trained to be a battlemage too. She didn't have a last name because they weren't commonly used in the countryside, later she came up with a name Shadowglynn. It expressed what she thought about herself and who she wanted to be. Over time she relied on her powers more and more.
One day, her unit was invited to an official meeting by the ruler. It was strange from the very beginning - why would he invite a group of young and not so important battlemages? They didn't really trust the officials and were afraid of entering the capital city. They've heard many stories about the place and being sent on a mission that was useless or even wrong according to the person who had to do it. This time, it was something different. The meeting was boring, but normal until two or three ice dragons smashed the huge castle door.
It turned out that a high-ranked official started a rebellion against the current ruler and Phoebe and her friends witnessed the beginning of it. Both sides asked the battlemages for support but they didn't get it. They were both too corrupt to be saved from the other one. Dragons didn't care about any negotiations, once they flew inside they started to attack anyone who was close. One of them blasted an ice breath on Phoebe, knocking her behind some furniture. She woke up a few minutes later outside, when the group escaped from the castle.
They were in serious trouble, the country was about to turn into chaos and they were conflicted with both major powers. No matter who would win, they weren't welcome so they decided to escape before the conflict becomes bigger. She didn't really like her first name and also wanted to use a more common name to be less recognizable, just in case.
Being attacked using powerful elemental magical creature made her lose her own magical powers. She could only freeze tiny objects with her fingers, but nothing else. Nina was really used to manipulating the elements and having a job simply by having these powers. It wasn't easy to start again and get very good at something else. She remembered that she had been a cartographer before. She came back to it and after a lot of learning and training, she improved her mapmaking skills enough to do it for a living.
After events in the castle and everything that happened later Nina started questioning her values and moral code. She doesn't know anymore if one should follow all of the rules and tries to decide if she should do something with the problems in the country where she lived. She doesn't really know what's going on there and kept a flag patch (on the sleeve).
