You really thought John would just spend his time trying to catch Cole? The creature fleed from the now erased world he was kept in, and required another victim to sustain his terrible desire of extracting a life from a damned mortal like Cole. And throughout all this time, he indeed gained a great amount of lifes taken... and, he also had a very twisted sense of joy, keeping some of his hardest catches as Inmortality-infested trophies, making a regular soul seem like it feels nothing compared to these screaming abominations
