As the son of wrestling promoter and former American Wrestling Association star Joe Blanchard, Tully Blanchard was involved in professional wrestling at a very young age. He began selling programs and refreshments at the arenas at the age of ten, and worked as a referee when he was older. He began his career as a face by tag teaming with his father in a feud against Dory Funk, Jr. and Terry Funk.

Blanchard's career was highlighted by his alliances with Ric Flair and various members of the wrestling stable The Four Horsemen. The Four Horsemen moniker was not planned from the start. At a television taping, production threw together an impromptu tag team interview of Flair, The Andersons, Tully Blanchard and J.J. Dillon (manager). During this interview Arn commented: "The only time this much havoc had been wreaked by this few a number of people, you need to go all the way back to the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse!" He also debuted the group's trademark four finger pose at this time.

When Blanchard and Anderson joined Vince McMahon's World Wrestling Federation they were named the Brain Busters. The team took Bobby "The Brain" Heenan as their manager and quickly began rising through the tag team ranks. On July 18, 1989, the Brain Busters won the tag team titles, ending Demolition's historic reign of 478 days.

On March 31, 2012, Blanchard was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame as a member of the Four Horsemen.
