due to a sudden nuclear war, nuclear waste was leaked into the oceans and rivers of the world, causing all the poor creatures that were swimming absentmindedly in there to suffer from extreme radioactive poisoning. sadly, most natural aquatic life was destroyed in the devastating turn of events :(. however, one species of fish did benefit - the goldfish.

in fact, because of the radiation, a mutation altered the genes of the regular goldfish, and after a few hundred years of reproduction, their intelligence passed humans' significantly, meaning that they knew much more than the people on land thought.

now, i know you're probably thinking: "but if they evolved, surely they should've developed at least hands or something useful like that?" and the reason why they hadn't developed anything like that is because their minds evolved so quickly, their bodies couldn't keep up and so, even though they looked pretty dead inside, they were actually extremely advanced beings with an intellectual ability far beyond what a human could even process.

and because of this extreme intelligence, some technology left over from the nuclear war, and their weirdly large lips to hold tools (the only thing that strangely did change on the outside), they created humanoid robot bodies so that they could move around on land easily, hold things with their metallic hands, and develop further.

now that the goldfish could create and create and create, inventions were being made faster than ever and the population of the goldfish nation was rapidly increasing every week.

once they had made many different weapons (such as the laser sword brian has) and transport (flying boats - inspiration from sunken ships on the sea bed that they had seen), they were ready to begin their master plan of plundering the recovering human population. and so they did.

they also ruled fashion as they had managed to make water molecules bond in a certain way that they formed a sort of cloth that could be worn (which is what brian is nicely modelling).

as well as being fashionable, brian is the captain of one of the ships and has his trusty octopus pal (who mutated to be able to breathe on land as well as in the ocean) that clings to his leg, and his little fish friends that swim in his coat to help him fly across the seas, and go about their days stealing whatever they wanted. slowly but surely, they were taking over the world and space was next.

so that's what the future holds - an ever growing mutant pirate goldfish community that plunders the humans on earth and perhaps other lifeforms/planets later on, and maybe in a few hundred years or so, they will evolve to have arms and legs too. (let's hope.)
