General Winfield Scott (June 13, 1786–May 29, 1866), also known as the Grand Old Man of the Army and Old Fuss and Feathers, was a prominent military figure in the 19th century, known for his distinguished career and strategic leadership during the Mexican-American War. During the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), General Scott played a pivotal role as the commanding general of the United States Army. He devised a comprehensive military strategy that involved capturing key Mexican cities and ports, ultimately leading to the defeat of Mexican forces. Scott's plan included a daring amphibious landing at Veracruz, followed by a steady advance towards Mexico City. This campaign, known as the "Anaconda Plan," proved highly successful and resulted in the Mexican surrender.However, during the war, General Scott developed a deep enmity towards fellow officer William S. Harney. Scott believed that Harney's reckless tactics and disregard for strategic planning put American soldiers' lives at unnecessary risk. This animosity stemmed from Harney's actions during the Battle of Churubusco, where he pursued a hasty attack against Mexican forces without proper reconnaissance, leading to heavy American casualties. Scott vehemently criticised Harney's conduct and regarded him as a moron. The animosity grew even further beyond as Harney got away scot-free thanks to his connections with former presidents like Andrew Jackson and James Polk.General Scott's reputation and leadership skills were further tested during the San Juan Island dispute, commonly known as the Pig War. In 1859, tensions arose between the United States and Great Britain over the possession of San Juan Island, located in the Pacific Northwest. Both American and British settlers claimed sovereignty over the island, leading to a military standoff.To defuse the situation, General Scott was appointed as the mediator and sent to the island to negotiate a peaceful resolution. Upon arriving, he quickly recognised the volatile nature of the situation and removed William Harney from command due to his well-known recklessness. General Scott believed that Harney's sabre-rattling would only exacerbate the already tense standoff. Consequently, Scott replaced Captain George Pickett, the officer conspiring with Harney, with a more level-headed officer. When General Scott overheard that Harney had put Pickett back on the island, he would have beat the ever-loving shite out of him. Whether he did or not, history doesn't tell.


Under Scott's leadership, negotiations were successfully conducted, and the crisis was resolved without bloodshed. The dispute was ultimately settled through diplomatic means, with the signing of the Treaty of Washington in 1871, which awarded the island to the United States.

General Winfield Scott's military career was marked by his strategic brilliance, particularly during the Mexican-American War. His enmity for William Harney and his role in removing him from command during the San Juan Island dispute demonstrated Scott's commitment to preserving the safety and well-being of his troops. Scott's contributions to American military history continue to be celebrated, solidifying his legacy as one of the most influential military leaders of his time.
