Back in the day when horror movies were creative (I'm looking at you, Ouija...) and Stanley Kubrick was THE MAN. He took the popular Stephen King novel, The Shining, and made a movie that changed horror. Jack Nicholson brought his own crazy talent into the main role, and the movie is reverred ever since.

The skin is also basically the perfect embodiment of that. Very distinct.
