His Royal Highness, The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, born as Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, and later known as Philip Mountbatten, to Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and his wife Princess Alice of Battenberg was the husband and consort to the late and great Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom.

Prince Philip was born at Mon Repos, the summer residence owned by the Greek Royal Family, into both the Greek and Danish royal families respectively. Despite being born into the Greek Royal Family, his family was exiled from Greece when he was only eighteen months old following the 1922 Greek Coup by the Hellenic Army. Philips family settled in Paris, France where he was educated. At the age of 18 years old, Prince Philip joined the Royal Navy in 1939. During the outbreak of the Second World War, served in the Royal Navy with distinction in both the British Mediterranean and Pacific fleets. In 1946, Prince Philip was granted permission by His Majesty, King George V to marry Her Royal Highness, The Princess Elizabeth, the heir to the British throne. In 1947, before the announcement of his engagement to The Princess Elizabeth, stopped using his Greek and Danish royal titles, became a naturalised British subject as well as adopting his maternal grandparents surname of Mountbatten. In the November of 1947, Philip married The Princess Elizabeth, subsequently being created the Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich by letters patent. In 1957, during the early years of his wife's reign, Philip was created a British Prince. Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II had four children: Charles, Prince of Wales (later King Charles III), Anne, Princess Royal. Prince Andrew, Duke of York and Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex (later Duke of Edinburgh).

Prince Philip was the longest-lived male member of the British Royal Family. He was the patron, president and member of over 780 organisations and charities as well as being the founder and chairman of The Duke of Edinburgh's award, a youth programme for people aged 14 to 24. In 2017, Prince Philip retired from royal duties at the age of 96 after completing 22,219 solo engagements and 5,493 speeches since 1952. Sadly, on 9th April 2021, it was announced that His Royal Highness, the Duke of Edinburgh had passed away at the age of 99 at Windsor Castle.
