An Iron Man suit can control itself without "a guy".
Technically Iron man suit can be a robot.
The final fight from Iron Man 3 can prove that point.

The mark 3 cannot move on it's own. It has to be assembled around tony stark to wear it. also the mark 3 was destroyed in iron man 3. suits couldn't be controlled to act like a person until the mark 7. you need to do better research on iron man

Maybe you are right about the last point , Mark 3 cant act like a person automatically by itself.
But if you think about it that way , then Iron Man is more like a robot suit , a wearable robot suit.
For example, take a look at "Hyundai's robot suit."
That suit majoritarily help people enchant strength.
Because It can't move itself when there's no person wearing it.
So it can't be a robot ?
Therefore , although It might be can't move on it's own , it still can be count as a robot.
It count as a robot it's all because the suit still related to technology , mechanical , engineering and computer science.
Robot doesn't mean it has it's own thought or can be control itself completely.
Even a robot that requires a person to control it , it still a robot.

So the most effective way to prove it can be a robot is,
It's a wearable robot and the exoskeleton is humanoid , and can help you do complex task. Related to technology , mechanical , engineering and computer science. The technology is so advanced that humanity haven't reached yet.

If stark is in the suit.
So can you see him on the skin ?
Stark can control the suit without wearing it.
Besides , Iron Man suit and robot are both related to technology , mechanical and computer science.
So why not ?
