My entry for the Tropical Party contest!
The sun shines down upon the earth, its warm, glistening rays scatter across the surface of the palm leaves and seep down into the lush jungle below. On the edges of the jungle lie the shifting sands of the beach, a place darted with sprouting plants, crushed pieces of driftwood, and sea-eroded stones. The ocean wind rushes through the air, the roaring waves crash down upon the sea shore, and the leaves shuffle overhead. Things remain calm. Groups of colorfully-clad people walk amidst the beach, some searching for treasures long forgotten; others playing some strange sport, blitzing at one another and kicking dusty clouds up from the dunes; and a few simply resting upon the outer shoreline; yet, not a single soul is to be found swimming in the water.
One looking upon the scene might simply wonder why. The view is utterly breathtaking, even to those living along the coast bearing witness to it every single day; the sea pours in with a splendid mixture of serene coastal rushes and roaring tidal waves slamming down further into the waters; and the weather is beautifully warm, yet not distressfully hot.
But suddenly, that all changes...
Out of the sea erupts a grand spring of water towering forty feet high, within its confines protrudes a coiling beast. A beast that is double, perhaps even triple the size of the spire of liquid it arose from; a beast that is cladded from head to toe in shimmering scales and thick, thorny protrusions; a beast whose fanged maw looks as though it could devour an entire village in one fell bite. It writhes into the air and slices its way through the sky just a couple hundred feet away from the coast, eventually allowing some portions of its snake-like body to come crashing back down into the rippling water and send massive waves pluming towards the coast.
Though paling in size compared to such a grand titan, the leviathan is not alone as it emerges from the water. Clinging on for dear life in an iron grip is a sporty young teen in vibrant apparel with a widened, toothy smile across his face. To some, this boy might appear a fool risking his life for no proper reason, but to others he is a living legend...
He is Koa, Tamer of the Seas. Through sheer might, will, and ambition, he wrestles the leviathans of the sea for sport and drives them back into the depths of the abyss where they belong. Little is known about the young lad, whether he is the demi-god son of a deity of bravery, a local youth with a knack for taming the serpents, a spiritual mirage, or something all together different. But the work he does is immaculate, and treasured by those who wish to enjoy the beautiful sea.
Wherever there is a need for a sea-beast to be driven away, there is Koa.
TL;DR: Koa is a young, brave tamer of oceanic beasts who climbs aboard these hulking monstrosities and drives them away from the shore and back towards the abyss where they belong.
