As I recall, it was the Dutch painters of the late renaissance used to create vanitas paintings - simultaneous embodiments of wealth and mortality. The characteristic memento mori motif exemplified the transience and futility of life - wealth and accomplishment being moot in the face of death. Ironically, vanitases themselves became symbols of wealth for well-off merchants who commissioned them from artists.

It's been a pretty cool week, having the 7 year anniversary coincide with my mid-semester break, pushing out some cheeky remakes, celebrating 500 subs 6 months late, and finally pulling the trigger on my skin comp. I think about transcience a lot - I see it not as futility but as something to appreciate. We all befall the same fate - I want to do something I enjoy - something I find meaningful - in the mean time. And right now, that's skinning.
