He sat by the fireplace, then slowly got up, and walked to the window. As he peered out of it, he could already see the lights of northern Canadian cities. "The population has grown too much in the last 50 years...", he quietly said to himself. The sound of a bitter wind howled outside, he felt his long white beard. He couldn't keep up with the amount of children he'd have to deliver to. Surely traveling at supersonic speeds would do the trick, but even that was getting too slow. Christmas would be in another 3 months, but for him it was too soon.

He entered the Toymaking Department. Many elves took of notice of him and saluted him, but even he could see that they were fatigued. There weren't enough elves to make such a great volume of toys. A number of them ran up to him, asking if he had a solution to the problem. He replied, "Even I, the great Saint Nick, cannot even comprehend what we will have to do in the next 50 years..." The elves were saddened, they were working 20 hour shifts, their morale was falling through the floor. And Santa had to find out a way to return the North Pole to its former glory.

He quickly gathered up his smartest assistants, as well as Rudolph and his translator. Within minutes, a decision was made. But would it be wise?

They called it the Elven Manufacturing Prototype, or for short, EMP. These were artificial toy-assembling robots that could produce just as many toys as regular elves, but didn't get tired. They were powered by the Spirit of Christmas, so as long as St. Nick was alive (forever), they would keep operating. However, the group decided only to build enough to reduce the workload on the real elves, but still let them keep their jobs. The first two prototypes failed, and at the time it was only 1 month until Christmas.
