,,Yeah, we're on our way!
We're on our way!
We're on our way to breakin' through-
'Cause we were made for something new-
We're on our way!
We're on our way!
We're on our way to chasin' dreams-
'Cause we were made for greater things-
We're on our way!''

* pharaoh's note: i chose the ice spikes as my biome; there's a bit of lore behind the entire skin, but the outfit was loosely inspired by the eskimos. the light blue stuff is half-ice, half-magic - read the lore and find out!

"Living in a Land of Icicles" - Lore Story
* author's note: kōri here uses they/them pronouns. i honestly have not interacted with any nonbinaries - most of my friends go by she/her or he/him - and so if i have inaccurately represented nonbinaries, please tell me! i would love to know what i've done wrong, and how to fix it!

the following piece is an excerpt from the future collections of stories known as Little Library of Dimensions. this is its first stand-alone original series entry.

Kōri stretched their hand out, and from the wisps of light blue magic that circled around their hands - sometimes solidifying onto their hands and arm, and sometimes loosely rolling around it like water - a cable of blue energy extended out and connected to the other ice spike.

They jerked, and swung across from one ice spike to another. Their feet, covered with the same energy as their hands, stuck the landing quite easily. They took a deep breath of the below-zero cold air around them; the lack of warmth had never mattered to them. The wind picked up briefly, and the snapping breeze that fluttered their fur-lined hood made them sigh. Their deep ocean blue eyes stared out across the white landscape, protected by all of these spikes.

Another day in this land; another day stuck to the icicles.

It was Kōri’s duty to protect these sacred grounds, of course; that was the mission assigned to them by their master. They slowly lowered themself to the ground, always making sure that a foot or hand kept in contact with the solid ice. They hugged their knees to their chest and watched as the baby orange sun flew to a baby blue color; similar to the color of the magic surrounding them, but with more blue than cyan.

But they were all alone. Protecting a treasure long-lost to time; even Kōri was not sure how much time had passed. They groaned, and fell back onto their back, staring aimlessly up into the sky that was changing colors. Their eyes and pale-pink skin had long become unaffected by the damage the bright sun could cause; a little side effect of the magical duty bequeathed unto them.

Kōri sighed, letting their eyes slip close as they let the warmth bathe over them. No one had dared even step foot into their lands in hundreds of years. After all, these mountains were prone to easy avalanches, and the icicles they were forever bound to were not as defenseless as they seemed.

They peeked their eyes open, narrowing them. Well, that was a bit of a white lie. After all-

They flinched, feeling a presence enter inside their domain. They quickly sat up, and thrust their hand forward, aiming for a spike off in the distance. The line of energy was shaken by the wind, but managed to snap onto its target. Kōri yanked, and they were flung forward. While swinging out, they shot another line from their unused hand, and proceeded to swing their way across the jungle of icicles, with the air speed around them increasing with every swing.

Soon, the field of ice spikes ended, and they landed on one that bordered upon the edge of it. They looked down, staring intensely at the human wearing a crimson-red hood. Their hand was grasped tightly at the top of it, trying to keep it down against the wind that had picked up. Kōri snorted, before easily sliding down the side of the icicle.

The figure jumped as Kōri continued to stare at them, and a voice chuckled nervously. “Kōri!” they said, letting their hood fall. Burgundy-red hair swung behind her, and the ice guardian was once more reminded of how dumbfounded they were that someone could have so much hair. "It’s been a while hasn’t it?"

They smiled. "Yes, it has, Emily. What takes you here?"

The girl smiled at the lonely guardian. “Well, I figured it had been a while since I last saw you, so I should visit again!”

Kōri smiled. They had lost sense of the track of time. But this red headed girl who stumbled her way into their land once upon accident had become one of (well, the only) their closest companions.

Emily chatted away about all the things they could do together — always forgetting about Kōri’s little bind, not that they minded; it was entertaining and sweet to hear her treat them like a normal person — as Kōri lifted the two of them to the top of the icicle Kōri was currently stuck to.

They wrapped an arm around her waist, causing her to jolt. They smiled. "Are you ready?"

"Of cours—wOAH! HEY!!" She broke off into a scream as Kōri began swinging. Their laughter echoed throughout the cold desert, mixed in with her cheery screams.

Perhaps their master hadn’t been as clueless about the spikes as Kōri had thought.
