accompanying piece - light i: sunlight
a/n: the main purpose of these writing pieces was to not only get back my writing mojo, but to try and expand my writing. i have a bad habit of cutting to the action, and i want to learn how to bring out a story through character thoughts. "procrastinating random garbage", as my family likes to call spewing anything for classes, is harder than it seems! -laughs-
also, im getting sliding back into the puzzle dorks here. everything is post-canon, but you really need to know nothing to enjoy the fluff (and spontaneous headcanons).
also im writing a little bit more in Agatha Christie's style since im currently obsessed over Poirot :')
Light I: Sunlight
The darkness behind his eyes slowly creeped away, and stirred his mind to wakening.
He groaned softly, before fluttering open his eyes. The first thing he caught sight of was not the light that had brought him out of his sleep, but rather his partner, sleeping peacefully beside him. His breaths were small, barely lifting his diaphragm with each inhale, but the amethyst orbs Atem knew were behind those eyelids were perfectly serene.
The sunlight from the skylight slowly streamed down onto his partner, lighting up his peaceful appearance. Over the years, his body had grown one more time, shooting him up to the same height as Atem. The trees freckled the light falling down on his partner, giving Atem the sensation of being under a tree, under its shade with him.
Each of their arms, Atem’s Egyptian tanned one and his partner’s milky white one, were wrapped around each other, pulling them together flush. Atem sighed softly, melting at his partner’s serene expression in the moment. It looked like every day he was always busy, despite not having to save the world anymore. If he wasn’t busy with college, then he was busy with Atem or his friends; never a moment during then did his bright smile drop.
Atem breathed a bit of a harsher exhale than he hoped, and stilled in his motions, eyes wide. But his partner didn’t do more than grumble in his sleep, murmuring “get your hands off the food, Jou” and falling back asleep. Atem chuckled silently at his partner’s annoyance at their friend in his dreams. He squeezed his partner once more, falling back into the crook of his neck to fall back asleep when his partner twitched.
A soft exhale landed on Atem’s neck, causing him to shiver. Yugi’s breaths turned into soft laughs as Atem pulled away, peeking one eye open, to watch his partner stir to morningness. Slowly, with the carefulness of a newborn taking its first steps, his eyelids lifted and dazzled Atem with their bright glory. Yugi smiled sleepily, then pecked Atem on the lips briefly.
“Good morning.”
“‘Morning. How did you sleep?”
Yugi stretched his back, arching like a cat with a peaceful hum. Atem laughed a little, before squeezing Yugi tight to keep him in his embrace. Yugi grunted a little, then relaxed into his bonds. “I slept like a very warm log,” the former Pharaoh replied. Yugi grinned, the speckled sunlight brightening his smile. Atem hummed, and kissed Yugi on his temple before resting their foreheads together, peeking open his other eye as well.
“Wanna get up?” Yugi whispered, half-desperate not to break their peaceful bubble. Atem smiled, thanking the gods for this chance to be with Yugi again, before murmuring back:
“Nah. Let’s just stay here.”
“Okay.”
