Many of you have probably heard of Saint Nick before but this is the Saint that lived in the third century.
Saint Nicholas would leave gifts in children's shoes when left out for him. Sometimes he would even give presents in exchange for snacks for his horses, I presume this is where we get the milk and cookies for Santa. One time he tossed gold into someone's home and it landed in stockings they had drying above the fireplace, so that is where we get the gifts in the stockings.

Okay, now that you know about Saint Nicholas let me give you a history lesson behind Santa. We all know how Christmas was started, Jesus' birthday and all that. Saint Nicholas is the basis for Santa Claus. The Dutch I believe, didn't want Saint Nicholas to be more "popular" than Jesus so they made up "Sinterklaas" which was kind of like modern day Santa. In the early days of America the legend of Sinterklaas came to the U.S. and was then translated into Santa Claus. Santa was first pictured in the early 1800's, a famous poem by Clement Clarke Moore which was called "A Visit From Saint Nicholas" commonly known as "Twas The Night Before Christmas" really gave shape to the Santa we all know and love today. The whole image of Santa really started when Thomas Nast drew illustrations based on "Twas The Night Before Christmas." Then you do have the whole Coca Cola advertisements, which really sparked the commercialization of Santa Claus.

A little fun fact Rudolph was made in the 1930's by a writer at a department store.

Well there you have it folks, a little history lesson, I hope you learned something new today.
