Story
Hello. A long time ago, I can't remember how far back, but a long time ago... there were other people on this planet with me, my family, and friends.. Now I'm alone..
15 years before...
"My turn, Kendra!" my friend Tori shouts. "Let me try!" she adds as she attempts to summon the small grains of sand from her palms as I had done moments before. Sweat gleamed on her forehead as she concentrated on the magic we'd been taught in school. After a moment or two, she was able to replicate the sand grains on the ground. After playing for a while more, I heard footsteps in the sand. Tori doesn't appear to notice, so I ask her if she hears something. "No. Wh-" She begins, but is interrupted by a huge BANG. 'Gunfire?' I think to myself, alarmed. I didn't really know what it was back then, but I'd heard some of the older people in our village talk about it a few times. Tori pulls me behind a rock as soon as she hears the shots. She whispers, "We've gotta get to your sister's house." I nod, and use the magic i'd been taught at school to create a temporary wall to protect us as we run to my sister's house. As we dash in I let she sand wall behind me fall to the ground while my sister opens the latch to the basement, ducking behind the clay walls for cover. She manages to open it and she shoves Tori and I in, before telling us to stay down there until everything was quiet. Then she closed the trapdoor.
That was the last I saw of her.
As we were pushed into the cool basement, a group of three men began to beat on the door. They were able to get in quickly, and soon Tori and I heard a scream and then a gunshot, then a thunk on the floor. I cringed.
After what seemed like an eternity, the outside world seemed to be quiet. I climbed out of the basement with Tori following me. I looked around for my sister, but she wasn't there... I wondered where she was, but then shortly after, I decided I didn't want to know. Tori said she'd go around the village and see if anyone was still alive, but.. She never came back..
A few days later I found Tori's dead body a small ways away from the village. I'd been bracing myself for the worst, so I wasn't surprised when I found her dead in the sand, though I was confused as to how she had died. I sighed, turned away, and looked to the deserted village, and set upon fixing the place up.
I entered the schoolhouse, a relatively small building with lots of books of spells relating to the desert. I began to memorize them, one by one, so I could defend myself if those men ever came back.
