Hello everybody! Today I present you the skin of
Sir William Cross - the hospitaller.(1161-1230)
Originally from Lancaster, he was a very skilled swordsman with a desire for knowledge and adventure.
Having these 2 desires, he first set out to travel England. Being the Christian he was, he also sought information
on the Holy Land. And so it came to be, that after travelling a little part of England, he decided that he wanted to set out for Jerusalem. And set out he did, and in the year 1188 at the age of 27, he arrived in Jerusalem. He strolled through the city, admiring it, but also seeing the aftermath of the crusades. He then walked passed the Muristan district, where he discovered the Amalfitan hospital, and discovered the Order of Hospitallers. He liked their overall concept and decided to join the order. He thought that his swordskills could be a usefull asset. And right he was.
Then, in early September 1191, they called him as a commander for the battle of Arsuf, which they would fight with King Richard's army against the Saracens. Hospitaller - master Garnier de Nablus was also there. Richard had this scheme, that they shouldn't attack, and let the enemy exhaust himself. The problem was, it was a really hot day, and everyone was thirsty. Garnier pleaded to Richard that the hospitallers may attack, but he denied it. But Garnier, alongside Baldwin de Carron, another hospitaller, charged at the Saracens anyway, which eventually led to Richard winning the battle. Unknown to many, Garnier and Baldwin weren't the only ones to charge into the enemy first, for William did the exact same thing! William charged with nothing but his sword and his armour, for he didn't need more. Afterwards, Richard ordered the rest to charge as well. William managed to kill quite a few Saracens, but one scarred his right eye. Luckily, he can still see, but he has a big scar there now... He didn't die though. He came out victorious. He then spent the rest of his days training hospitallers. He had become a legend among them.
He later travelled to Russia, but that ... is a tale for another day.
So that, in short, is the story of Sir William Cross!
