Untouched for Millions of Years
I stared- we stared at each other, for what felt like millennia.
You can't see me, not with your vestigial eyes.
But you sense the presence of light, and that's meaning enough.
The water separating us, we inhabit two different planets. I the surface, and you the caves.
You glow in the cone of my flashlight. Casting your reflection upon this subterranean lake, like the very Moon up above.
A Moon you've never known. You are very much like that Moon. Shining white, little lunar figure in your world of darkness.
Untarnished for ages; untarnished you will remain.
I seal this foreign world behind me. This is your reality, not mine.
Untarnished you will remain.
End.
When I read the prompt for this challenge I got inspired quickly, Troglobites may as well be the poster children for this type of prompt, as they've lived in complete darkness for incredible amounts of time. As a result they've developed a number of unique but signature traits.
Pale pigmentation, blindness, and heightened senses to make up for that blindess.
I've tried to adapt these traits into my character. I gave it pale skin. I've under-emphasized the eyes by making them small and blending them into the skin color. And I've tried to signify the heightened senses by adding pink sensory organs all along its body.
Also I really liked the idea of a lone explorer coming across the home of this creature. The cave creature bathed in light on a backdrop of darkness is an image I couldn't get out of my mind, so I wrote up a small short story to accompany my entry! I hope it gets the vibes across : )
