Vlad Dracula was a Romanian prince who lived from 1431-1476. He is also know as Vlad the Impaler. Vlad is most commonly known for his vicious torture methods, impalement and dismemberment. It is most commonly believed that he was a sadist, a person who delights in the pain and suffering of others. During his two year reign, he executed an estimated 40,000-100,000 people. A Turkish story tells of Turks going to war against Romania but turning back after seeing piles of corpses on the bank of a river. Even after his imprisonment, Vlad caught and tortured birds in jail. When he was killed, his head was sent to the sultan at Istanbul for proof that Vlad the Impaler was finally dead. Count Dracula of Bram Stoker's Dracula is based off of Vlad, seeing as they are both from the same place and have an infamous taste for blood.
