William I, usually known as William the Conqueror and sometimes as William the Bastard, was the first Norman King of England, reigning from 1066 until his death in 1087.
Essentially this man of Normandy mercilessly and ruthlessly conquered England, stomped the remaining resistance, created a massive defensive system on Welsh borders and replaced many influential people in positions of power with fellow Normans. Kind of a douche bag, but pretty effective when it comes to leadership.
