When I use Optifine the game crashes unless I delete 'default.json'. Is there a file I can delete/edit/add to make it not crash?

That's strange. I never saw anything like that happen, so I do not know how to answer that. I am using optifine with it just fine. Maybe try asking in the Optifine discord

history
I found a way to get the font to work. If you turn the TTS file into a unicode image, you can make a folder called font in the textures folder. If you duplicate the image and name them 'ascii' and 'unicode_page_00' it will render as an Optifine HD font and work.

I used a tool called glyph_gen (https://mcbeeringi.github.io/apps/mc/glyph.html) to turn the TTS into unicode and used font size 73 to make the font the same size as it it is without Optifine. The tool is for Bedrock Edition, but there is an option to download the 'glyph_00' file and that can be the equivalent of a Unicode Sheet to the game even though the letters aren't in the same order.

Even though the pack is compatible with 1.16.5, normally, I think it doesn't work with Optifine 1.16.5. (which is what I am using)

Actually, you only need to put the 'ascii' image. Otherwise the 'Force Unicode Font' setting won't work.

Can you make this in bedrock too?

Unfortunately not, maybe someone else could.
