As said in the ticket, a 'mention' should not happen when just typing a name but rather when intentionally trying to mention a user (example used in the ticket is using "@" as a keyword). So accidental mentions would not occur (might be a good idea for chat as well? Maybe? Possibly?).
Still think that a toggle would be a good option to have, just not for the reason you listed :P. I was more thinking about people just not wanting to be mentioned, regardless of their username being a common word or not.

Mention Users in Forum Posts
I have no idea as to whether or not this is possible, but I think it would be nice to have a feature in the forums where you can 'mention' a user in a forum post.
When you mention a user, the user mentioned will receive a notification in their inbox; it would say something like "<user> mentioned you in <forum thread title>!".
To execute a mention, it could be something simple like "@<username>".
Example:
Tech: Wow @Paril what an amazing feature you've added to the website!
And instead of it showing "@Paril" it would show "Paril" in a special look so people know he was mentioned. It could even be a hyperlink to the user's profile, even.
Again, I have no idea as to whether or not this could be done but I thought it'd be nice to suggest.
Thanks for listening.
