1.3 Emerald Question

When 1.3 comes out, will emeralds spawn in my world I already play in, or will I have to start a new world in order for emeralds to spawn. This may sound like a stupid question but I really don't know the answer. The reason why I'm asking this is because I downloaded the snapshot and couldn't find any emeralds. I am 80% positive that they do spawn on the already generated world. Thanks in advance!
