Okay, so I'm looking for a server right? Well almost all I see is "Faction PvP Raid Grief!!!". This is getting really annoying to me. This is somewhat of a guide on setting up servers / horrible server rant. (Also my first blog)

First things first, plugins and config.

Here, some people might be thinking I'm going to tell you what plugins to get. WRONG. I'm not going to do that, because YOU want your server to be unique with its groups and plugins and what not. Most servers have about the same plugins, factions, essentials, mcmmo. These ones, are okay, besides factions, I have found numerous different plugins similar to factions that seem interesting. now the config files... I have somebody doing most of this on my server, but I know a little bit. What you want to do with these is have plugins that can enhance a players experience and make his/her stay more enjoyable. Try to make groups unique, maybe have a few different groups that have different advantages/disadvantages.

Now... for god's sake the spawn

Spawn, the initial reaction of a player coming on the server. If a server doesn't have a neat spawn / no spawn at all, players are most likely NOT going to stay. So to those people out there who just buy a server and then open it
with NO spawn and almost NO plugins... get your friends, build a good spawn, and learn how to config the plugins, I'm learning as I go. Also, enough of the plain old spawn (shop to your left or right, then rules and staff on the other side.) Make like a quiz for the rules and if they get one wrong, they die or get kicked for not reading the rules (I'm planning to do this on my server.) Also enough of the downloaded spawns. The only reason I downloaded the prison on my prison server is because a bug erased my old one and I wanted to get the server up. We are still going to be building our own prison. Also, install a portal portal plugin, make it so that there are different teleporters to different places.

Being friendly

Be friendly to your players just don't say "welcome!" and then blow them off like an ant. Talk to them, get to know them. Knowing your player age group also will allow you to customize your server to that age group. Talking to your players will also allow you to find potential staff. It can also make some players more likely to donate, take my server for example, $30 in purchases (THEY ARE NOT DONATIONS THEY ARE PURCHASING IN GAME ITEMS) in less then 5 days of being open.

Original Ideas

Okay, if you are still reading, thank you. Be original. Take my server for example, its a prison AND drug server. Once you get out of prison, you can choose a criminal, citizen, or police path. How do you think MineZ was started? How do you think Dwarves vs Zombies was started? All of these were started from ONE original idea, they didn't copy ideas and make an easy way. We are losing these servers. These servers are mostly the only good ones on pmc. I'm sure there are some people who are thinking "HEY MY SERVER IS AMAZING AND I COPIED AN IDEA". No, no its not, have you gotten 20 people on your server (at one time) within 2 days of it opening? As long as you copy an idea, the best your server can be is alright. Enough said, I don't want to hurt the 10 year old server owner's feelings. Which brings me to my next point.

Server Owners in general, and What they are.

Server Owners are people of authority... as long as they respect you. The only time I disrespect my players is if they disrespect me or my server, and I have great staff AND players that will stand behind me. Also, if you are only 9 or 10 years old, don't own a server. Most of you are too immature and will just dump players in lava most of the time, or use /kill. Honestly there isn't much to say here, just be mature and respect your players, enough said.
