SO YOU WANNA PVP, HUH?
... ... ...

Well... Maybe I'm asking the wrong question...
How do you PvP right?
That's a difficult question, because so many variables are involved:
  • factions, plugins, skins (yup), and mods (external)
  • terrain, skill levels, and equipment (armor, weapons, bow, arrows) (internal)
As such, no strategy will be right for every situation. Thus, your most effective skill in PvPing

is to be ADAPTABLE. Learn to recognize what techniques will work best in your current situation.

In my mind, there are 4 main types of PvPers.
  • hands-on (sword and armor)
  • ranged (bow-and-arrows)
  • techies (TNT cannons, traps)
  • chemophiles (splash potions, positive or negative)
(that's just me, if you play differently, speak up :D)

GENERAL TIPS:
  • Enchant. You will always have an advantage over your opponents.
  • Play with audio on. Hearing those enemy's footsteps can be the difference between life and death.
  • Practice. Do fake match-ups with your friends, and all of you will improve.
  • Play with a team. If everyone one uses a different style, then one person doesn't have to multitask.
  • Keep an eye out for mobs, or your team might lose their nice everythingssssssssss...
  • Have fun. Be a good sport, lose or win. Don't cheat.

IN-DEPTH

Hands-on PvPers mercilessly hack-and-slash their opponents.
If you like to get up close and personal, grab a sword and armor!
If your server has economy, diamond armor is a lot less of a pain to procure,
if diamonds are scarce, go for iron, the next best, but ALWAYS HAVE A DIAMOND SWORD.
Don't use axes, they deal a half heart less damage, and lose double durability while attacking.
The exception to this is if your axe has Sharpness and Knockback II or better.

Ranged PvPers enjoy picking off their assailants, laughing all the while.
If you like the playing God and sniping, pick up a bow and some arrows!
AMMO MANAGEMENT IS KEY. Don't take the shot unless it's a sure thing. (or you've got multiple stacks of arrows)
Don't lose yourself in your crosshairs. Someone might be sneaking up on you at any time.
Keep multiple bows for longer engagements.

Techies are strategic, and prefer to test their minds over their reflexes.
LEARN HOW TO MAKE EFFECTIVE TRAPS. Whether it be hidden pits, complex redstone configurations, or
directing the location of mobs, you can always think of some way to trip up your enemy. Keep redstone, levers, buttons, TNT, and pressure plates on hand (and in copious amounts). Spiderwebs can make an interesting trap.
Also carry a pickaxe, shovel, and axe, because you need to be able to clear space quickly when you make traps.

Chemophiles unleash their inner mad scientist by brewing potions.
Maybe you can't throw sulphuric acid in someone's face, but this is a socially acceptable substitute.
KNOW HOW TO BREW. Keep your ingredients handy, farm them if possible. Strike a balance between benificial potions to share with your teammates and harmful splash potions to plague your enemies. Also balance between second-tier potions and extended-effect potions.

TEAMWORK STRATEGIES
  • Pair a hands-on combatant with everyone as guards, and station one or more at every strategic point (bases, outposts, TNT cannons)
  • Keep archers either completely hidden, or high and dry.
  • COMMUNICATION IS VITAL TO SUCCESS, if your opponents can hear you, develop some sort of code, but if you do, keep it simple and memorable.
  • Conserve resources: only enough food and itmes for everyone.
  • Chemoplhiles, share a few potions with everyone.
  • If you have multiple ranged combatants, synchronize your attacks, change cover after every shot.
  • Ender Pearls make great transportation, and can be used in a pinch.
  • Fire is good. 'Nuff said. (well, maybe not 'nuff... make sure it spreads, it can demoralize the enemy and cut them off.)
  • Before you lock and load, have someone glug a speed potion and scout out enemy territory.
  • Have a central base, heavily fortified and guarded.
  • HELP YOUR TEAMMATES. They will remember it, and hopefully be there for you when you're in a tight spot.
EXTERNAL FACTORS

You know, sometimes people like to spice things up a little when they PvP. This is where plugins, mods, and skins come in.
  • understand any PvP-centric plugins.
  • if you use combat mods, make sure your opponents (and teammates) are aware of it and approve.
  • DO NOT USE MODS THAT ARE ILLEGAL ON YOUR SERVER.
  • pick a skin that is very inconspicuous. (camo)

PSYCHOLOGY AND RISK

the key to PvP is having your head in the game at all times. If you can make your opponents unsure and scared, all the better. trash-talk is acceptable, but don't go overboard. it's only a game, no need for feelings to be hurt. tell them about all of the hunger games you've won, mobs you've killed, or whatever.
risk is a factor you want to consider. everything you lose, your enemy gains. lotta XP? good armor? valuable items? don't go charging into combat unless you're A) sure you can win, B) the situation is dire, or C) the rewrads are greater than what you could lose.
