Bandwidth

Recently I have had the problem of bandwidth. I know lots of other people also have a problem with bandwidth so I have written this blog to hopefully answer some questions.

As we all know bandwidth caps suck. You never know how much you're using, how much you've used and how much you have left. I know I'm always fretting about how much I'm using when I play Minecraft, Team Fortress 2 and lots of my other games. One place that you have to be careful on is YouTube. One time I was watching a bunch of videos in 1080p and 720p and ended up using up 10 gigabytes in only one night! I'm pretty sure my plan is about 90-100 gigabytes but I know of many people who have less. Some people I know only have about 30 gigabytes per month. Now to answer questions.

How much bandwidth will playing Minecraft on a server take up?
If you play on a server with just one other person it could take up to 184kbps (kilobytes per second). Multiply that by 60 you get 11040kbpm (kilobytes per minute)/11.04mbpm (megabytes per minute)/0.01gbps (gigabytes per minute). Multiply that by 60 you get .66gbph (gigabytes per hour). So if you played for a whole day (24 hours) you could use up to 15gb! Obviously this will be slightly larger if you play on a server with more people.

Can this vary depending on what people are doing?
The answer is yes. If everyone on the server was standing still and not doing anything the usage could average under .30kbps (about .001 gigabytes every hour). However if everyone is running around PvPing, mining, parkour etc. this could use more than 1gb every hour!
