Barett ran out of there as fast as he could. He had been given his map back, as well as a bit of water and food, but it was nothing compared to the supplies he had before. Following his map, he went south, past some buildings that looked like they might have been warehouses or office buildings back in the day. After being attacked and kidnapped, he was very on edge, and he picked up a sharp, bent up piece of metal. He passed a weathered sign that appeared to say “Geiger Boulevard”. He would have laughed at it, but he didn’t feel like it now.

After a short time, Barett came to East Platte Avenue, and went east. He was walking for about an hour, when he came to another blockaded Walmart. Just like before there was a makeshift roadblock going across the road, and there were soldiers standing around. Instead of running away like he did last time, he mustered up the courage to talk to one of the soldiers.

“Is there any way I can get to the other side?” Barett asked.

A soldier with a black molle vest and light grey shirt looked disdainfully at Barett.

“Why do you need to ‘get to the other side’?” The guard asked back.

“My mom is dying, and if she is going to live, I need to get over there,” he pointed past the short wall.

“That’s a lie if I ever heard one,” laughed the soldier.

“Eh, just let the kid through,” said another soldier, “he can’t hurt anything.”

“Whatever!” the first soldier said irritatedly. “Okay, I will let you through, as long as you give me some water.”

Barett gave him a bottle of water and the soldier opened a heavy gate made of a flattened car, turned on its side. Right after Barett heard the makeshift door slam behind him, he realised why the blockades had been set up. There were pieces of garbage everywhere and all of the windows had been shattered by the shockwave. Cars with popped tires and peeled off paint sat motionlessly, their long deceased drivers still at the wheel. The lampposts had all been bent and violently ripped from their concrete foundations. Signs were almost completely disintegrated, with only the strong ones or ones in protected areas vaguely recognizable. The buildings, stores, restaurants, and car dealerships were stripped down to their frames. The paint had been mostly all burned off, revealing raw brick walls and charred wooden frames. Barett started to lose hope that the hospital would be intact.

He looked at his map and saw that he was only a little over a mile away! He broke into a run. He only ran for a few seconds before he ran out of breath. He broke into a fast walk. He speed walked for ten minutes, and then slowed down. He took a quick look at the map. After walking for a few more minutes, he looked at the small, squiggly red line on his map, and turned north. He saw a light tan tank driving towards him.

Its armour had sharp, triangular angles to deflect bullets. The barrel of the tank was almost six feet long, luckily it wasn’t pointed at him, not yet. On top of the turret was an unmanned fifty calibre machine gun, and on the front were two small lights that lit up the road in front of the tank. Barett jumped off the left side of the road to avoid the tank. He realised that he is somewhere that maybe he shouldn’t be. There were soldiers by the hospital, wearing tan camouflage. Barett snuck behind an obliterated Taco Bell that looked like it had been the location of a large battle. There were bullet holes in the walls, and blood stains on the dust-covered floor. He looked past the dead trees at the hospital.

It was far away and Barett could barely make out the windowed brick structure. Upon seeing this, he was filled with determination, and began moving towards the hospital in a strange crouch-run. Instead of following a road like he had been doing for most of his journey, he cut across yards of dying grass and through destroyed houses, trying not to be seen. He sprinted up through what likely used to be an alleyway, then came to Boulder Street There he saw it in all its glory, the UChealth Memorial Hospital.
