Oh gosh, here I am, writing a blog series...

Buut lets get this over with.

CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM

Arright, so what is this phenomenon? Constructive Criticism is a good thing, it is meant to help people to make their stuff better... BUT its been distorted much too much. Lets observe on someone who isn't even trying:
undefined

Gawsh, that's harsh (please note, all of these examples i will be pulling off of my own posts). He didn't give any reason for why its crap, why he doesn't like it, how to improve, etc. That's not helpful, and just makes enemies.

So lets establish that no one will like you if you do that, and it does no good, besides stoking a self-confidence that you're better than everyone else.

Well that happened... Lets try not to do that k? Moving on...

Lets take another look at this k?
undefined

See? thats much better. MUCH BETTER.

He's not only telling me that its not that good, he's doing it calmly, and respectively. And he tells me how to make it better. This guy got it right.

Lets look at another shall we? (i've got tons of these)
undefined

Yayaya, no offence, lets all believe that...

He didn't give any kind of feedback, just stated his opinion, instating that he thought it wasn't good. He didn't outright say it, but he implied it.

Another?

undefined

Language... tut tut. Always a no-no. Language can always be interpreted as flaming in these circumstances, and that's not good. He is also not telling me how to improve, just stating that it is bad in a vulgar way.

So what does this have to do with ANYTHING? Well, lets look...

Example 2 did the best job, but lets look at how to do this the absolute best way possible. I have one last example, taken from one of my skins:
undefined
And again:
undefined
AND AGAIN:
undefined

He didn't just give me advice to start with, he stuck with me until I thought it was good. He is the epitomy of all the constructive criticism I've ever gotten.

So, why don't we just combine everything here into a nice little express package to take with you?

  1. Remember, to make it clear and concise. If people can't understand you, then you've wasted your time.
  2. Be sure to tell them how they've failed, and how to make it better. (This is really important, REALLY IMPORTANT
  3. Be considerate, and be prepared to keep helping them. Don't give criticism and expect it to be taken first time, understood, and put into practice.
  4. If all else fails, you at least tried.

Alright, now after that, it seems like common practice to place a "how to respond" to this criticism. Lets look at these bullet points:

  1. Respond, be happy. Someone cared enough to tell you how you failed
  2. Respond respectively. Don't yell at them. They took time to tell you how you failed.
  3. If they made it clear how to fix your failures, then DO IT HOSS. Don't just say, "Thanks, I might try that." and never do.
  4. Thank them.

That make sense? Good, it should.

So, now then, lets do something cheesy like a paint-drawn "plz dimund" sign, or something to that extent.
undefined

Yup, i'm getting a new one soon.

Oh Bother

I am just waiting for someone to try to insult this blog so the comments can tear him apart XD
Joking aside, I think this was a good blog and it's about time someone made one about this topic. Diamond from me!

Thank you for addressing this, as I think it's a topic that many people need to understand and must be corrected on, not only for Minecraft but also with so many other things!

But tbh this issue is prevalent especially on PMC.  Glad there's finally a good post about constructive criticism :)

First off, I highly encourage you to take a look at a blog written by my dear friend..
http://www.planetminecraft.com/blog/constructive-criticism-criticism-and-its-role-in-the-pmc-community/

Now, if you take a look through the comments on that blog (Hopefully after reading it), you'll find a certain "MayaCookieGirl". Now, I guess I ought to tell you a bit about her to introduce my point. She wrote a blog about not hurting others feelings - It relates a bit to your blog actually. But Noah and I, we saw many problems with it.

You see, I first made the claim that she was wrong in the blog. Her opinion was wrong. However, I provided evidence as to why it was. Noah and I took apart her blog, putting nearly the whole thing in short, 1 sentence chunks, and explained what was wrong with them. What we did not do was tell her what she should do. We had to fight with her for weeks for her to see her fault.

I think that in your blog, Pikamoar, you fail to adress the fact that you don't need to tell the "sender" what to do. If you tell them what is wrong with their.. whatever it is they've got, they can make it into something else. It's their project. But it always happens - They want it to become mine, my own little project. I'm to tell them what to write. Your blog actually seems to support users like Maya.

 Anyway..
Your blog was quite nice - A great change from the usual misinformed opinions I find on PMC. I didn't like the way the blog was set up though. The formatting, the order of thoughts; It didn't flow. Well, I'll leave it at that. Have a nice evening!

But I feel as if if you said how she should've gotten better, she'd have taken your advice better. Breaking down someones post and saying how they failed might work, but most of us wouldn't take it that well. If next time you do something like that, it might go better to say how to get better.

But i might change up the actual layout of the blog, and add in some more content sometime, thanks

The thing is, I don't want to tell someone how to make their project. I want to leave that open for them to decide.

It's also important to remember I did it in a very nice manner.
