Prologue: Eldrick
I was tired of false leads. My master was growing impatient, and I needed to find the Darkstone Ruby before my neck ended up on the block. Currently I was in a desert, and it was literally killing me. My Necromancy and Sangumancy had betrayed me by turning my skin to a very pale white. As a result, being in heat for too long would start to burn my flesh away. I kneeled down on the hot sand and placed my fist on it. It glowed with a light blue energy, and a skeleton emerged from the earth. I ordered it to meld with the skeleton that I had already summoned, and they became a skeleton horse which I mounted promptly. I made it gallop the rest of the way to the location my informant provided. As it rode, I fell asleep.
*****
I awoke to the sight of a massive structure. It was large and rectangular, made of a black material I didn’t recognize, and had rubies placed every now and then for decoration. The door was made of what looked like a very dark wood, darker than tainted dark oak. There was a keyhole, but I didn’t want to risk anything here. I summoned another skeleton, then had it touch the keyhole. As expected, its bony hand collided with the keyhole as if it was simply another part of the wood around it. Then it burst into blue flames, before it became a pile of ashes. I repeated this process until I found the real hole, then I inserted the key into it and turned. The doors swung open, and I found myself looking into a long hallway. There were columns supporting the roof, etched with scenes of death and destruction. The floor was covered in a blood red carpet, at the end of which was a pedestal. On the pedestal was a ruby, darker than any ruby I had seen before. I cast a flight spell and rushed over the carpet, not wanting to risk any traps. I grabbed the stone and examined it. Then I cackled in malicious joy and stuffed it in my inventory. All that was needed now were some soul gems and corrupted silver, and the Crown of Artisian would be mine!
