The order of durability in crafted tools is as follows:
Gold, with 32 uses is the least practical to use and is only good as a ceremonial or decorative feature.
Next is wood or leather. With 64 uses, it is more practical than gold, apart from mining ability and damage done.
After that is Stone or chain with 128 uses. With this, you can mine iron and it does much more damage than wood.
Second-Best is iron. With this, you can mine the big materials and you have more than 250 uses. This is almost as good as diamond, save the durability and damage.
Finally, best is diamond with 2130 uses and max damage points and the most protection. This is really practical, especially for getting to the nether and killing mobs (especially creepers and the ender dragon.)
