WHAT IT IS FOR:

This mine is for getting resources like coal, iron, cobblestone, and possibly finding caves, dungeons, rare ores, etc. VERY QUICK! You only need a stone pickaxe and maybe a shovel as well, making it good for getting ores on the first day.

HOW TO MAKE IT:

To create this mine, get your pick and shovel, and stand directly between two blocks, preferably around level 64, you just don't want to start this on top of a mountain, and dig a 2x1 column the whole way down to bedrock. If you stand in between the two blocks like this:

You should be able to dig one of the blocks out from under you while still staying on the other one, and if you dig the block below you and it opens into a cavern (in this case, the dirt) you will stay on top of the stone and safe. If you do this the whole way down to bedrock, you are almost guaranteed to hit coal, and you will probably find iron as well. Underground structures and rarer ores like diamond are also possible, but the best way to find those is by creating a strip mine. Once you get to bedrock or a point where you can't go down any further, you should have around 2 stacks of cobblestone, 1 of which you can use to block jump your way out and cap the top off. It should look something like this when you are done:

THE DOWNSIDES TO THIS MINING TECHNIQUE:

If you die in your mine, it is very hard to get your drops back out, so be very careful, especially if you find a cave or dungeon

It is unlikely that you will find rarer items with just one of these mines, although a few in the same area could work.

It sucks being stuck in one of these at night with little protection, so start mining earlier in the day, probably before noon or VERY soon after.
