Herobrine is possibly the most famous Minecraft creepypasta and is one of the major community icons of Minecraft. Herobrine creates random constructions, such as pyramids and long 2-block-high tunnels. He also burns down, or cuts off leaves from trees, and creates cobblestone-complexes underground, much like dungeons, lit with redstone torches. He first appeared on the Minecraft forums in a single image detailing an encounter. It stated how Herobrine had appeared in someone's single-player game, littering the map with various pyramids and tunnels. There have been several spinoff theories that say that Herobrine was created by Mojang in honor of Notch's deceased brother.
Despite it's popularity, Herobrine is nothing more than a myth and has not appeared in any official versions of the game. Mojang has often joked around with some of the Minecraft updates by saying that they "removed Herobine" in the update logs. According to Notch (who does not have any deceased siblings), "There's no way a morally dubious ghost with a god complex could at any point decide to haunt the children who play my game 'for their own good', as there is NO SUCH THING."
