100,000 views! Thanks!

Do you wanna know how to make colored signs and books in Minecraft? Well follow the simple steps below :D

BEDROCK EDITION (Mobile & Console):

1. Place a sign on the ground (or right click a book).

2. Type "§" (Or copy+paste it)

How to type "§"

3. After you typed "§", tap a number or letter in the table below. Then, type a few letters and you will discover that they have changed color or font!

NOTE: The "§" followed by a number will NOT show on the sign/book when you exit.

Color Codes (stolen from here):
§0 BLACK
§1 DARK BLUE
§2 DARK GREEN
§3 DARK AQUA
§4 DARK RED
§5 DARK PURPLE
§6 GOLD
§7 GRAY
§8 DARK GRAY
§9 INDIGO
§A GREEN
§B AQUA
§C RED
§D PINK
§E YELLOW
§F WHITE
§M STRIKE THROUGH
§N UNDERLINED
§L BOLD
§K RANDOM
§O ITALIC

JAVA EDITION (PC & MAC):

1.8+ (CHEATS):
Please follow these links for a sign/book generator (it can even produce signs and books with commands!):
Signs: https://minecraft.tools/en/sign.php
Books: https://minecraft.tools/en/book.php

Explanation: This method uses a JSON formatter to edit the NBT tags of the sign you are giving yourself. This essentially gives you full control of everything the sign can do, from it's displayname (Insert ",display:{Name:"{\"text\":\"YOUR SIGN NAME HERE\"}"}" at the end of command to change it) to it's color and commands.

1.14+ (SURVIVAL):
The latest Java Edition release of 1.14 added a neat way of changing the colors of signs (in survival mode!): Simply right click a dye item on a sign that you have placed down. This will change all the text on the sign to the color of the dye you are holding.

Unfortunately, this is only limited to the entire text on the sign. If you want to edit each individual letter or line, use the creative mode method above.

NOTE FOR JAVA EDITION SERVERS:
If you are on a Minecraft server which supports colored signs (ask an admin or the owner if you do not know), you may use the color codes described above in the Bedrock edition. Just remember to replace the "§" with a "&".

If this tutorial helped you, please give it a diamond :D

Unfortunately, Minecraft Java edition does not allow you to paste that symbol (and a lot of other unicode characters as well) anymore. You will either have to use cheats or dye (if you are in 1.14).

Alt+21 gives me a different symbol. For me, on my laptop with windows 10, it's 25 to get that symbol. Also it does not seem to work, on my realm at least. Was there something I needed to download?

Just found on minecraft.gamepedia.com that Alt+0167 (using number pad) is how I have to preface my txt to get colors.

Yeah, on some computers alt codes are different. Take a look at this article.

Good that you figured it out yourself :D

It's actually possible to type the § character on a Danish QWERTY keyboard by using Shift + ½ (located right below escape key)

If you want to do this but use an English keyboard, you can on Windows add the Danish one by going to Settings -> Time and language -> Language -> Click English -> Options -> Add a keyboard -> Danish (QWERTY). After that you can use Win + space to switch between keyboards.

I recommend using alt codes over this if you are English, but on some laptops alt codes don't work.

Good to know. That's sightly tedious though, so yeah alt codes are your best bet.

You're right, it doesn't seem like you can copy paste § on a Java edition world, not even for books. You'll have to use a command generator from this website.

I've discovered how to get the symbol on Nintendo Switch (and this may be applicable to other consoles). All you need to do is when typing in the book or sign or chat, go into the language settings and scroll all the way down. There, you will find the symbols option. Activating this language will come up with 4 pages of symbols. On page 2, on the bottom row is the special symbol.

Hey, Mine didn't work in Minecraft PE. I was on a realm, but ppl had colored words on their signs so it IS possible. Any idea how I could make it work? Thanks. (p.s. I tried putting §F in front of the words directly, with a space before, before and after directly, and before and after with spaces)
Edit: Okay, so I could get all of the ones with numbers to work, just not letters

How do you end the Italicized when you go onto the next line?

It should automatically clear all formatting when moving lines. If it doesn't, use §R to reset the formatting.

This is nice and all, but signs are easy, just use commands. Its simple, here, have this. Made this when I was learning NBT tags. (1.13 ONLY):

1 LINE:
/give @p sign{BlockEntityTag:{Text1:"{\"text\":\"Text\",\"color\":\"green\"}",display:{Name:"{\"text\":\"Custom Sign\"}"}}} 1

2 LINES:

/give @p sign{BlockEntityTag:{Text1:"{\"text\":\"Text\",\"color\":\"green\"}",Text2:"{\"text\":\"Text 2\",\"color\":\"green\"}"},display:{Name:"{\"text\":\"Custom Sign\"}"}} 1

3 LINES:

/give @p sign{BlockEntityTag:{Text1:"{\"text\":\"Text\",\"color\":\"green\"}",Text2:"{\"text\":\"Text 2\",\"color\":\"green\"}", Text3:"{\"text\":\"Text 3\",\"color\":\"green\"}"}, display:{Name:"{\"text\":\"Custom Sign\"}"}} 1

4 LINES:

/give @p sign{BlockEntityTag:{Text1:"{\"text\":\"Text\",\"color\":\"green\"}",Text2:"{\"text\":\"Text 2\",\"color\":\"green\"}", Text3:"{\"text\":\"Text 3\",\"color\":\"green\"}", Text4:"{\"text\":\"Text 4\",\"color\":\"green\"}"}, display:{Name:"{\"text\":\"Custom Sign\"}"}} 1

----------------------------------------------------------------

I made this in 1.12.2 originally, edited it for 1.13.
Here is 1.12:

1 LINE:
/give @p sign 1 0 {BlockEntityTag:{Text1:"{\"text\":\"Text\",\"color\":\"green\"}"},display:{Name:"Custom Sign"}}

2 LINES:

/give @p sign 1 0 {BlockEntityTag:{Text1:"{\"text\":\"Text\",\"color\":\"green\"}",Text2:"{\"text\":\"Text 2\",\"color\":\"green\"}"},display:{Name:"Custom Sign"}}

3 LINES:

/give @p sign 1 0 {BlockEntityTag:{Text1:"{\"text\":\"Text\",\"color\":\"green"}",Text2:"{\"text\":\"Text 2\",\"color\":\"green\"}", Text3:"{\"text\":\"Text 3\",\"color\":\"green\"}"}, display:{Name:"Custom Sign"}}

4 LINES:

/give @p sign 1 0 {BlockEntityTag:{Text1:"{\"text\":\"Text\",\"color\":\"green\"}",Text2:"{\"text\":\"Text 2\",\"color\":\"green\"}", Text3:"{\"text\":\"Text 3\",\"color\":\"green\"}", Text4:"{\"text\":\"Text 4\",\"color\":\"green\"}"}, display:{Name:"Custom Sign"}}

Did I use a generator? No, I was tempted though. As I said, I made this while learning NBT tags.

how do you change the text????

08/26/2018 7:11 pm

act777u
edit the
display:{Name:"Custom Sign"}
to
display:{Name:"{\"text\":\"Custom Sign\"}"}

you can also make a lore (the smaller text underneath the name):
display:{Lore:["A sign made by act777u"],Name:"{\"text\":\"Custom Sign\"}"}

the reason for all the \" is to escape the quotes, if you do a bit of programming, you will understand.
I find it stupid and way over-complicated, especially for new to NBT people, but there you go.
