Introduction

In this tutorial, I will try to walk you through my methods of learning to play the lyre, and various other instruments from the Genshin Instruments mod - following the humble request of user NotRiplatki_.

For those who do not know, this is a mod I made that implements all 4 of Genshin Impact's instruments. Thus, any who is already familiar with the instruments from there, this mod should feel like home.
However, the advantage of Minecraft is that it is significantly more optimized than Genshin in terms of input latency. This makes it so that every key you press, you will hear in much less delay compared to the game original game - making the learning environment much, much more friendly. This also allows duets (trios, quartets etc) to occur - as I found that syncing with latency is a humongous challenge. Also, you are not limited to 4 players!

But I digress - let us begin.

Getting Started

For beginners, I primarily recommend to use the lyre, simply because of its fluent and clear note sounds - although the Zither is a nice pace of change sometimes.

Quoted from the Windsong Lyre wiki page:
The lyre can be played on PC using either the keyboard or the mouse. On
the keyboard, the top row of notes (treble clef, π„ž) are mapped to the
letters Q to U, the middle row (alto clef, 𝄑) from A to J, and the bottom row (bass clef, 𝄒) from Z to M.

To simplify - this means that the lower (left/down) you go in the instrument's grid, the deeper the sound will be, whereas the higher (right/up) you go, the higher the sound will be.
Thus, Z possess the deepest sound, while U has the highest. This is, of course, assuming you are on the QWERTY keyboard style - however, the mod can detect your keyboard layout automatically.
Refer to the screenshot below:

Additionally, the instruments are also built of 7 rows each, replicating the Do Re Mi ... Ti. You can switch to this label view via the Instrument Options.

Hand Arrangement

The way you choose to place your hands on the keyboard matters quite a lot, for both beginner and advanced songs. This is because in some cases, you will not only press a singular note - but rather multiple at a time; something that a single hand cannot achieve.

Different to most players, I use the technique of splitting the keyboard into 2 parts - left and right.

Some do top and bottom, because this is how a piano is typically arranged. I find this rather annoying and difficult, so I don't do nor recommend this.

It really is up to you on what finds you comfortable, though.

Playing

Keyboard Sheets

Of course, no one is just improvising on which notes to play. Not pianists, guitarists - nor us, keyboard players. We all need music sheets to study our piece - at least once.
Most Genshin music sheets out there consist of QWERTY keys you must press, often capital. The format I use is the following:

  • If there is no space between letters - press them together
  • If there is space between letters - the amount of space between them is the delay between them
  • If there is a dash (-) between letters - the delay between them will be halfed.
  • A newline is identical to 2 delays
  •   If a line ends with (str), a newline should be treated as 1 delay
  •   If a line ends with (long), a newline should be treated as 4 delays
  • Curly brackets ({}) indicate that you should play all the notes with very little delay. It is recommend to the the notes such as your left hands presses what's before the dash (-), and your right what's after. (For instance, {ADQ-G} - left hand presses ADQ and right hand presses G)

Below you will find the notes of some songs I know, sorted by the difficulty I think suits it, as well as the origin video (if exists).

I only cherry-picked the ones I personally liked most and learned. You can search on YouTube and Google regarding "Genshin lyre easy" (could be paired with a song you like), and most chances you will find it :)

My tip is to find an easy song you like (using the search terms mentioned earlier), and just don't stop playing it until you remember it; even if by muscle memory. That it how I personally learned :D

Remember that no pianist ever just sat on their piano and began playing Moonlight Sonata—it is a vast learning process, just like any instrument, and you should train for the day where you shall play your favorite piece in full ^^
