I've seen many skins on PMC that were good, but nobody paid attention to them because they weren't shaded. This is why I made this blog.

This is the simplest way I know of to shade skins. If you know a better way, please let me know.

  1. Download Paint.NET, a free photo editing/creating software.
  2. Make or find a shading template. I suggest the latter. Shading templates are just plain white skins, but shaded.
  3. Copy it, and paste it into a new layer on your skin. Do this by going to 'Edit' and 'Paste into new layer.'
  4. Click 'Layers,' then 'Layer Properties.'
  5. Set 'Blending Mode' in the drop-down menu to 'Multiply.' If the skin is too dark, turn down the opacity until you think it looks good.
  6. If your skin has a hat, copy-paste the head of the shading template over it, then delete the invisible parts.
  7. Press 'Image,' then 'Flatten.' This will combine the bottom and top layer, making it into one.
  8. You're done! Hope this helped!

this is really interesting (and awesome, and easy to use) but do we need paint.net?

I don't know of any other program where you can do this. Except Photoshop. But that's obviously not free.
